There are three sections to the competition.
Section 1 - Solo Performance
This section is open to 13 to 18 year olds who live or attend school in the Sutherland Shire or St George area.
Shermacher & Charlotte Fetherston adjudicating this Performance Section.
Note for vocalists: We also have prizes for the best Opera, Music Theatre and Folk performances.
Section 2 - “SMC Banksia Award for Young Composers”
This is open to 13 to 18 year olds who live or attend school in the Sutherland Shire or St George area.
The 2023 Banksia section theme is “The Floods”, adjudicated by Kevin Hunt.
Note: Past YMA 1st place Banksia Composition winners are ineligible to re-enter this section.
An encouragement prize will be awarded to a first-time YMA Composition entrant.
Section 3 - “SMC Waratah Award for Young Composers”
This is open to 19 to 21 year olds who either live in the Sutherland Shire or St George area, or have been
previous entrants in our Youth Music Awards.
Past YMA 1st place Banksia Composition winners, even if not yet 19, have the honour of also being invited to enter. The 2023 Waratah section theme is “The Seasons”,
adjudicated by Aristea Mellos.
Other Important Information
The time limit is 5 minutes. The work may be for any combination of instruments from solo
instrument/voice, up to large ensemble (not exceeding 20 performers) or choir (SATB or SSAA).
Please ensure you read all Rules and Conditions. Entries will be judged from the submitted score, recording and description of work/theme interpretation (150 words maximum).
Hard copies of these should be delivered to the Co-ordinator (recording on USB or audio CD) and also uploaded to Dropbox and the link emailed to sutherlandyouthmusic@hotmail.com. A second entry may be submitted.
